The Tabula brand was created by Co.in.ra., an international benchmark company in research into rare wood essences, to enhance the most prized, unusual and special materials from its vast selection.
Tabula was born from the passion for wood that has been handed down for four generations in the Schurian family in a territory, Friuli Venezia Giulia, where the history and culture of Austria and Italy meet. Today this experience finds a new synthesis, in a concept of “natural design” that is based on a continuous search of ancient, rare and unusual woods, to transform them into original, exciting furnishing elements with a story to tell!
From the woods to furniture
The advantage of the short chain, the prestige of a 100% custom production.
Tabula selects the trunks directly in their places of origin, from Europe to North America, and directly follows all stages of maturing and processing. It is nature itself that determines the size and shape of the finished table, with a process that enhances the signs of time, external agents and even peculiarities such as splits, erosions and burns, transforming imperfection into beauty. Tabula creations are born in an industrious and creative work habitat, employing artisan techniques, dedicating many hours and lots of attention to each piece. Unique pieces that enrich every interior scenario with timeless values and sensations.
After selecting the trunks the first essential step is seasoning, a totally natural process performed for a length of time which, according to the wood, can vary from a few months to some years. Throughout this time the wood is kept under constant control until the fibres release most of the excess moisture thanks to the action of the air and weather conditions alone.
The drying phase is the final one in traditional wood seasoning, adopting the vacuum kiln technology so as to ensure a humidity level below 15%, also in the case of extra-thick boards, and achieving optimal structural stability. Heartwood, by its very nature, may settle further later on, according to the level of temperature and environmental humidity.
The rough board is worked on a calibrating machine to make it straight using abrasive belts of different hardness according to the properties of the wood. For this operation Tabula chooses carefully selected partners and checks on the quality of the result scrupulously.
Performed totally by hand in the Tabula workshop, planing gives the wood a smooth and pleasant touch. Experience, alongside manual skills, counts during this stage and allows a check, literally inch by inch, of the entire surface of the wood with careful observation of every detail.
Tabula stays with the customer throughout a process which begins with listening to needs up to an analysis of the spaces and interior designs, and is also on hand for inspections and meetings with private individuals, architects, designers and stylists, to produce tables and other items of furniture made to measure – tops for kitchens and baths, headboards for beds, panels for walls and so on.
Tabula can source rare and unusual woods to order, using its vast international network of suppliers, to meet specific requests from designers and collectors, always in accordance with laws on environmental protection.
