Questa straordinaria asse di rovere fossile, proveniente dalla Romania e risalente a circa 1600 anni fa, misura 110 cm di larghezza e ben 5 metri di lunghezza. \u00c8 ricavata da un tronco unico, abbattuto dagli elementi naturali quando l’albero aveva gi\u00e0 secoli di vita. Il grande diametro del tronco, insieme al processo di fossilizzazione, ha conferito al legno una colorazione particolare: gli strati esterni si sono anneriti nel tempo, creando affascinanti effetti cromatici.<\/p>\n

La fossilizzazione del legno \u00e8 un fenomeno raro e straordinario, reso possibile da condizioni naturali particolari. Il tronco deve essere immerso in acqua, spesso a causa di deviazioni fluviali, e successivamente sepolto sotto strati di sedimenti, come argilla o sabbia. Questi sedimenti creano un ambiente anaerobico, privo di ossigeno e di microrganismi, che consente la conservazione del legno per migliaia di anni.<\/p>\n

Il legno fossile \u00e8 un materiale di altissimo pregio, che richiede grande cura nella sua lavorazione. Dopo l’estrazione dal terreno, i tronchi vengono immersi in acqua o avvolti in cellophane per evitare che un’evaporazione troppo rapida possa separare le fibre interne, rischiando di danneggiarli. Successivamente, vengono sezionati in tavole grezze e lasciati riposare per mesi, stabilizzati con listelli e pesi per ottenere una forma perfettamente dritta.<\/p>\n

Dopo questa fase preliminare, si procede con una stagionatura naturale che dura anni. Infine, il legno viene essiccato in forni sottovuoto, raggiungendo un\u2019umidit\u00e0 ottimale del 14-16%. Il processo di lavorazione si conclude con una levigatura a mano, che esalta le caratteristiche uniche e irripetibili di ogni asse.<\/p>\n

Questo legno rappresenta un autentico pezzo di storia, combinando millenni di evoluzione naturale con l’eccellenza dell’artigianato.<\/p>\n

THE PLANE TREE OF PRIMO MAGGIO SQUARE, IN UDINE: A STORY OF REBIRTH AND TRANSFORMATION.<\/p>\n

On August 30, 2020, during a storm of exceptional violence, over 120 trees in the municipality of Udine were felled. Among these, one of the most majestic plane trees in the garden of Primo Maggio Square, to the east of the hill on which the Castle stands, also gave way. For about 220 years, this centuries-old tree had been a silent witness to events and changes, surviving even the fury of two Wars and the Friuli Earthquake of 1976. Offering shade to generations of citizens, it had become part of the urban landscape and the life of the square.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

AFTER THE FALL, THE PLANE TREE OF PRIMO MAGGIO SQUARE IN UDINE, REBIRTHS INTO NEW LIFE.<\/p>\n

Analysis by the Regional Phytosanitary Service of ERSA confirmed that the large plane tree had a diseased root system, while the trunk was in good condition. Dr. Andrea Maro\u00e8, official in charge of Monumental Trees for the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, as well as scientific director and president of GTF (Giant Trees Foundation Onlus, a foundation – created to understand, defend, and protect large trees – with which Tabula has been collaborating for years), stated that the wood of the fallen plane tree was workable. The opportunity to reuse the wood of that centuries-old tree, thus avoiding its disposal through combustion, was seen as an initial victory for environmental sustainability. Thanks to Tabula, the Plane Tree of Primo Maggio Square is given new life. It will be transformed into magnificent tables and unique design objects.<\/p>\n

THE RECOVERY PHASES<\/p>\n

On October 29, 2020, the operations to recover the magnificent natural giant began. The plane tree was then sawn into three parts directly at the recovery site. The trunk of about 6 meters, the ‘head bifurcation’, and the two largest branches were transported to a specialized sawmill for cutting into boards. Several unique boards were obtained from the cutting – including some truly remarkable ones with widths up to 180 cm – to create splendid tables and different tops for making original coffee tables. After seasoning, completed in spring 2023, the boards underwent a vacuum oven drying process to reach the right moisture content and to eliminate any parasites. Finally, the rough boards arrived at our laboratory in Campoformido in the summer of 2023. Here, skilled hands worked on one, making it even more unique and special. Slow and careful step by step, in December 2023, the first table made from that trunk was delivered.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
