This Coffee Table was made using a European Walnut trunk originally from Serbia and recovered in a sawmill in Styria.
The trunk was cut down, for safety reasons, between April and May 2016 in the period in which the tree enters lymph and suffers the effects of night frosts: the water inside the trunk freezes and breaks the fiber of the wood generating the so-called “cipollatura” and the characteristic blackish veins.

EUROPEAN WALNUT
It seems that this tree was imported into Europe by the Greek colonists of Asia Minor during the Bronze Age and its spread, starting from the Roman Empire until the Middle Ages, is due to the food importance of walnuts, a source of nutrients important but also of substances used in natural medicine. In ancient times this tree was associated with the figure of Jupiter and the walnuts were thrown in the wedding processions, as is done today with confetti. Widespread in the countryside as a tree associated with the vine, also because it is believed to keep harmful insects away.
