THE PLANE TREE OF PRIMO MAGGIO SQUARE, IN UDINE
On August 30, 2020, during a storm of exceptional violence, over 120 trees in the municipality of Udine were felled. Among these, one of the most majestic plane trees in the garden of Piazza Primo Maggio, to the east of the hill on which the Castle stands, also gave way. For about 220 years, this centuries-old tree had been a silent witness to events and changes, surviving even the fury of two Wars and the Friuli Earthquake of 1976. Offering shade to generations of citizens, it had become part of the urban landscape and the life of the square.
AN EXCEPTIONAL OAK LOG FROM THE PARK OF THE SAVOY
This park was home to a magnificent English oak (Quercus robur), which yielded an impressive log over 11 metres long, transported to a sawmill in Verona specialising in the recovery of large trees.
At 40 metres tall and almost a metre and a half in diameter, it was one of the park’s most impressive trees, so much so that it was included in the first list of monumental trees compiled by the Italian Forestry Corps in 1982.
Tabula wins Big See Design Award
The MTD 01 base, part of Tabula’s MT modular collection of metal bases designed by architect Tavano to work with the various tops regardless of size, has won the Big See Product Design Award 2023.
When designing MTD 01, Tavano was mindful of the inconsistent dimensions of the tops, their often considerable weight, and their extraordinary uniqueness. The bases he created provide the tables with great stability and weight-bearing capacity, while complementing – but never overpowering – the natural beauty of the board.
This metal base with a modular structure withstands the various stresses through a combination of differently sized sheets, facing in different directions. No matter the size, the structure is extremely stable, yet also lightweight and never cumbersome to the eye. The MT collection of bases features four colour options ideally suited to any setting (gold, burgundy, black and white) which highlight the wood’s natural grain and texture. It can also be made in other colours upon request.

The plane tree in Piazza Primo Maggio, Udine
The violent storm which struck the city of Udine on the evening of 30 August brought down over 120 trees across the municipal area. This included one of the great plane trees in Piazza Primo Maggio.
We went there on 29 October to recover this natural giant, and early work revealed some interesting information about the history of its setting, such as the ceramic electrical cable insulators from the late 1800s/early 1900s embedded within its trunk.
The gourmet table
Tabula plays a key role in the restyling of Udine’s most prestigious restaurant, the Vitello d’Oro. The project was designed by Visual Display and featured in Atelier magazine.
For the most exclusive room at the Vitello d’Oro, a historic restaurant in the heart of Udine, Tabula created a plane wood table five meters long, intended to host large social gatherings. Nationally and internationally renowned interior design studio Visual Display opted to add the appeal of a one-off piece completely crafted by hand.
